Thinking about joining a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class in Green, Uniontown, Akron, or Canton, Ohio but nervous about what to expect? You’re not alone. Many beginners worry and have the following questions:
“Will I know what to do?”
“What if I look silly?”
“Am I ready for sparring?”
At Team Kriebel Ohio Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (TKO), we make sure every student feels prepared from day one. That’s why every class begins with no-partner mobility drills — simple, effective movements designed to build confidence before you even start learning techniques or sparring.
It’s tempting to skip straight to sparring or flashy submissions, but success in Jiu-Jitsu starts with movement. Our warm-ups help students:
💪 Develop strength in common BJJ positions
🤸♀️ Improve flexibility for guard and transitions
🧘 Prevent injury with proper warm-ups
✅ Build confidence before rolling with partners
If you’re new to Jiu-Jitsu these drills will give you a head start before stepping onto the mats, but even if you are a seasoned athlete movement and mobility training is a necessary component to growth and longevity.
In the video, I demonstrate drills that mirror movements used in real Jiu-Jitsu techniques, including:
Hip mobility drills → essential for guard retention
Core engagement exercises → improve posture and balance
Transition drills → practice moving between common positions
Dynamic stretches → prepare your body for sparring (look for a future article on the differences between dynamic and static stretching)
Even if you’ve never trained before, you can follow along at home. These are the same warm-up routines we use at TKO BJJ in Green, Ohio before every class.
✅ Adults and kids trying their first BJJ class
✅ Parents who want their children to feel confident before training
